Government deepens Community Engagement as Relief Exercise Strengthens Resilience in Tana River
The national government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that emergency relief efforts are accompanied by long-term development initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and building resilient communities.
Speaking during a government relief food distribution exercise at Wenje Primary School in Gwano Location, Tana River County, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Cabinet Affairs, Dr. Idris Salim Dokota, said government interventions must extend beyond emergency assistance to address the underlying socio-economic challenges facing vulnerable communities.
The relief exercise provided food supplies to affected households while also serving as a platform for direct engagement between the government and residents. Dr. Dokota listened to concerns raised by community members and assured them that their views would inform ongoing government interventions.
He urged residents who are yet to acquire national identification cards to do so, noting that identification documents are critical in accessing government services, economic empowerment programmes, and participating fully in national development.
"The national identity card is more than a legal document. It opens doors to government opportunities, financial inclusion, and civic participation while enabling government to plan and deliver services effectively," he said.
The Principal Secretary highlighted several flagship projects being implemented under President William Ruto's development agenda to unlock the economic potential of Tana River County. These include investments in electricity connectivity, road infrastructure, affordable housing, water supply, and irrigation.
He said major initiatives such as the revival and expansion of the Bura Irrigation Scheme, the Tana Sugar Project, programmes under the Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority (TARDA), and investments in the Blue Economy are expected to create employment opportunities, enhance food security, and stimulate industrial growth across the region.
Dr. Dokota underscored the importance of peace and security as prerequisites for sustainable development, calling on residents, elders, youth, and local leaders to work closely with security agencies in maintaining stability.
He appealed to those in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them voluntarily, saying peaceful communities are better positioned to attract investment, improve education outcomes, and achieve sustained economic growth.
The Principal Secretary also cautioned residents living in flood-prone areas, particularly within the Tana Delta, to remain vigilant following forecasts of possible El Niño rains. He advised families to monitor official weather updates and comply with evacuation directives whenever issued by authorities.
He said national and county governments are working closely with humanitarian partners to strengthen disaster preparedness and response mechanisms, adding that effective emergency management depends on cooperation between government agencies and local communities.
Dr. Dokota commended local leaders and stakeholders for supporting the relief programme, including Tana River County Commissioner Joseph Mwangi Wamuti, County Chief Officer for Lands Francis Hiribae Malibe, and Kinakomba MCA Salim Babusa Hamid.
He reaffirmed the State Department for Cabinet Affairs' commitment to ensuring government programmes remain responsive to citizens' needs while advancing inclusive development, resilience, and sustainable livelihoods across Tana River County.
